Inexpensive and easy DIY picture framing using glazier points

DIY picture framing is an easy and inexpensive way to display art

I talked my hubby into accompanying me to an art show recently.  It’s not really his kind of thing, but he was surprised by how much he actually liked it.  It turned out to be a momentous occasion because he selected his first-ever piece of art for our home.

Usually I’m the only one in our family who is interested in art, but a photographer was showing some lovely works that had an amazing ability to capture my husband’s interest.  He was immediately drawn to a large photo on display.  It was available in a smaller 11″x20″ print for purchase, so he decided to buy it.

The next step was to get it framed.  I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on the framing, though.  Because the photograph was a signed and numbered print, it cost a little more than I wanted to spend.  I figure it’s worth it to have something my husband truly likes, but I wanted to be more frugal on the framing.

Since the photo was already matted, I decided I could handle the framing part myself.  So I headed to Hobby Lobby to pick up my supplies.  I thought everything I needed would be easy to find and would come with some instructions on how to frame my photo.  I was wrong.

There was a large selection of frames, and they were on sale for 50% off so I got a nice 16″x20″ frame for $20.  I had to ask about the other items – the glass insert and whatever I would need to hold everything in the frame.  Someone at the store said to use glazier points to attach the backing to the frame.

I had never actually heard of glazier points, but it turns out that it’s pretty easy and cost effective to use them for DIY picture framing.  The glazier points were inexpensive at just $1.99 for a package of 72 at Hobby Lobby.

Then I just had to figure out how to use the glazier points.  The package came with no instructions, and it wasn’t clear just by looking at them what I was supposed to do.

Once you find out out how to install glazier points, they’re super handy and easy for inexpensive DIY picture framing.  It takes just a few minutes to have art ready for display.

How to do it yourself:  Picture framing using glazier points

Once I had my glass clean and inserted into the frame, I was ready to add the photograph.

The frame and glass are ready.

This photograph was already matted and had a backing layer, so I just popped it into the frame.  Then I used a wide flat head screwdriver to push the glazier points into the frame.

My DIY picture framing tools.

It took a little bit of muscle, but they attached into the frame fairly easily.  I lined up the screwdriver carefully to push the glazier points into place with even force.

I didn’t need to use anything else, but you could tap the end of the screwdriver gently with a hammer if needed to move the glazier points into the frame.  (Be careful not to tap too hard or you could break the glass.)  On another site – Decor Adventures – I also saw instructions for inserting the glazier points using a putty knife.

I pushed the glazier points into the picture frame with a small screwdriver.

I spaced out the glazier points around the frame.  They hold the photograph snugly in the frame.  I didn’t need very many.  I used 10 of the glazier points for my 16″x20″ frame – three on each of the 20″ sides and two on the 16″ sides.  They came in a package of 72, so I have plenty left over for future DIY picture framing projects.

This side of the picture is all set with the glazier points in place.

Although I used them in a new picture frame, the glazier points would be great for reusing frames from yard sales or thrift stores to display different artwork!

I’m glad this post was helpful! I thought it was weird that there were no instructions with the glazier points since it’s not super intuitive how to use them when you look at the package. They’re very easy to use for DIY projects, though, once you get them figured out! :)
