Summer Reading: Once Upon a Summertime by Melody Carlson

Summer is the perfect time to relax with a nice, lighthearted book, don’t you think?

I recently had the opportunity to receive a complementary copy of “Once Upon a Summertime” by Melody Carlson.  Based on the title, I thought it would be a fun book to kick off the summer.

If you’re looking for a nice, wholesome summer read, “Once Upon a Summertime” is a good choice.  It’s the story of a small-town girl, Anna, who relocates to New York City to follow her career dreams.

This book gives readers a glimpse of what it’s like to move to New York – from visiting the city’s famous sites to dealing with housing.  However, many of the details fall into place easily for Anna, making this story read like a modern-day fairy tale.

Many aspects of the book brought to mind a fairy tale, from Anna’s childhood loss of her parents to the friend who acted as a fairy godmother to get Anna to New York and provided a place to stay as well as the right contacts to land a job.  In New York, Anna reconnects with a man who resembles a prince charming.

While I enjoyed reading the book, I did think the ending seemed rushed.  I would have liked to see more character and plot development leading up to the conclusion.  With that said, it was a nice, cheery book for a fictional escape to New York City.

Once Upon a Summertime: A New York City Romance is available at Amazon (affiliate link).  It’s the first book in the Follow Your Heart series, with the second book coming next summer in 2016.

I received a free copy of the book “Once Upon a Summertime” through the Revell Reads blogger program to facilitate my honest review.  All opinions are my own.
